I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this in African football.
What was supposed to be a historic AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal turned into one of the most chaotic and controversial nights the tournament has ever witnessed.
And now… Morocco are champions — not on the pitch, but through a decision that has divided opinions across the football world.
What actually happened in the final
Let me break it down the way I saw it.
Senegal initially won the game 1–0 after extra time, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal.
But the game had already descended into chaos before that.
- Senegal had a goal ruled out
- Morocco were awarded a late VAR penalty
- Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest
The game was delayed, tensions exploded, and even after returning, the atmosphere never really recovered.
Despite all that, Senegal finished the job and lifted the trophy…
Or so we thought.
CAF’s shocking decision

CAF reviewed the incident and ruled that Senegal’s actions — especially the walk-off protest — violated competition rules.

Did Morocco deserve it?
This is the difficult question.
