AFCON Final Chaos: How Morocco Were Awarded the 2025 Title After Senegal’s Walk-Off — Football or Controversy?

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this in African football.

What was supposed to be a historic AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal turned into one of the most chaotic and controversial nights the tournament has ever witnessed.

And now… Morocco are champions — not on the pitch, but through a decision that has divided opinions across the football world.

What actually happened in the final

Let me break it down the way I saw it.

Senegal initially won the game 1–0 after extra time, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal.

But the game had already descended into chaos before that.

  • Senegal had a goal ruled out
  • Morocco were awarded a late VAR penalty
  • Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest

The game was delayed, tensions exploded, and even after returning, the atmosphere never really recovered.

Despite all that, Senegal finished the job and lifted the trophy…

Or so we thought.

CAF’s shocking decision

This is where everything changed.

CAF reviewed the incident and ruled that Senegal’s actions — especially the walk-off protest — violated competition rules.

As a result:

Senegal’s win was overturned
The match was awarded as a 3–0 forfeit victory to Morocco
Morocco was officially crowned AFCON 2025 champions

I can’t lie… that’s a decision that will be debated for years.

Why the decision went Morocco’s way

From CAF’s perspective, it comes down to one key rule:

You cannot abandon or disrupt a match

Even though Senegal returned to the pitch later, the initial walk-off was seen as:

  • Unsporting behaviour
  • Interference with match flow
  • A violation serious enough to change the outcome

And that’s why the title was taken away from them.

Where Senegal got it wrong (my view)

If I’m being honest…

I understand the frustration — the decisions were controversial.

But walking off?

That’s where everything changed.

Because once you do that, you stop controlling your own destiny.

Instead of winning the game and letting football decide, the situation moved into the hands of officials — and that rarely ends well.

Did Morocco deserve it?

This is the difficult question.

On the pitch? Senegal won.

But in terms of rules? CAF backed Morocco.

And that’s what makes this situation so controversial.

Because now we’re asking:

Is football decided on the pitch… or in the boardroom?

Have we seen this before?

Honestly — not like this.

Yes, football has had:

  • Matches abandoned
  • Teams forfeiting games
  • Titles decided by disciplinary rulings

But a major international final being overturned AFTER it was played and won?

That’s extremely rare.

This might go down as:
One of the most controversial decisions in AFCON history

What this means moving forward

For me, this changes a lot:

  • CAF authority will be questioned
  • Teams may think twice before protesting decisions
  • And this final will always carry an asterisk in people’s minds

But one thing is certain…

People will be talking about this for a long time.
