Arsenal are confident. The window does not close until September 1. This is everything happening right now.

I have been trying to keep up with the transfer window since Spain lifted the World Cup trophy at MetLife Stadium twelve days ago and I want to be honest with you about something. I have failed. The pace of this summer’s market has been extraordinary. We are dealing with a window that opened in the shadow of the most successful World Cup in history, in a market already inflated by the Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson deals that pushed the British transfer record to £117 million within days of each other, and in a landscape where half the major clubs in Europe have brand new managers who are trying to reshape their squads from scratch simultaneously. It is an awful lot. Let me go through it all properly, club by club, story by story, and tell you what I actually think is happening and where I think each of these situations ends up.

Arsenal. Bruno Guimaraes Is Coming. And That Changes Everything.

Arsenal and Newcastle United have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Bruno Guimaraes. This is the biggest football story in England right now and it has been confirmed this afternoon by multiple sources including Fox Sports, Goal.com and L’Equipe, who broke the details of the breakthrough. Arsenal raised their bid to a base fee of €90 million, roughly £77 million, plus performance-related bonuses, after seeing initial offers of around €70 million and €80 million rejected by Newcastle. The Brazilian midfielder has already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract running until 2031. He has requested a delay in his pre-season travel to finalise the move, and a full agreement between the clubs is expected imminently.

I want to say something about what this signing means for Arsenal if it goes through, because I think its significance is being slightly underplayed in the immediate excitement. Bruno Guimaraes is 28 years old, has been Newcastle’s captain for the past two seasons, and made 195 appearances for the club since joining from Lyon in January 2022. Last season he scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 41 appearances across all competitions, making him one of the most complete box-to-box midfielders in the Premier League. He will slot alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in Arteta’s preferred midfield three, and the combination of those three players, each of them elite at what they do in a slightly different way, would give Arsenal arguably the best midfield unit in European football heading into the new season. Lyon will receive a payment exceeding €8 million from the fee due to the 20 percent sell-on clause included in their original deal with Newcastle. The Vinicius Junior story deserves its own detailed treatment because it has moved dramatically today and what I wrote earlier this week is no longer the full picture. On Monday, Sky Sports reported that Vinicius would be staying at Real Madrid and that Mourinho valued him highly. That was the situation three days ago. Today is a completely different story. Per MARCA, Real Madrid have tabled what they describe as a final take-it-or-leave-it contract offer to Vinicius. Per ESPN, cited in Sky Sports’ paper talk published tonight, Real Madrid are now open to the possibility of Vinicius leaving if he does not accept their contract offer, and they have no plans to increase it. Per TeamTalk, Arsenal are now described as confident of signing the Brazilian. What has changed is simple. Vinicius has one year left on his contract. Real Madrid will not allow him to run into the final six months when he could sign a pre-contract agreement with anyone outside Spain for free. They have made their offer. If he does not take it, they sell him this summer rather than lose him for nothing next year. His estimated market value is around £137 million.

Arsenal are the primary suitors and their interest is confirmed by Sky Sports, TeamTalk and multiple sources. No club-to-club contact has yet been confirmed, but the fact that Real Madrid are now openly willing to sell changes everything. A 26-year-old Ballon d’Or runner-up, still in peak form, available in the current market? Chelsea. Morgan Rogers. Maxence Lacroix. And a Very Full Centre-Back Department.

Chelsea under Xabi Alonso are moving with the kind of clarity and purpose that has been completely absent from Stamford Bridge for most of the last four years. Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa for £117 million, the most expensive British transfer in football history and the fifth most expensive transfer of any kind in the world. Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace has been officially confirmed at €60.7 million, giving Alonso the commanding, ball-playing centre-back he specifically identified as a priority when he took the job. Both signings fit a very clear tactical profile: progressive, comfortable in possession, able to play through pressure. Alonso has been explicit about what kind of team he wants to build and the early recruitment reflects it exactly.

The problem Chelsea now face, if you can call it a problem, is that they have ten senior centre-backs on their books. Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Josh Acheampong, Mamadou Sarr, Aaron Anselmino and now Lacroix. Alonso confirmed publicly this week that he wants only four or five centre-backs in his squad. That means at least five defenders are leaving Stamford Bridge before September 1. The sales will generate significant revenue that Chelsea will look to reinvest in attack.

The links to Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig are real but complicated. Chelsea have reportedly prepared an opening bid of around €100 million, but Leipzig’s asking price is €120 million and, more importantly, Diomande’s own preference is to join Paris Saint-Germain. Unless Chelsea can dramatically outbid PSG and convince the player to choose them, this one looks difficult. Victor Osimhen has also been reported as a striker target for Alonso, who specifically wants an elite number nine. No formal bid has been confirmed as yet.

Liverpool. Barcola Has Agreed Personal Terms. Now They Just Need to Agree the Fee.

The headline at Liverpool is Bradley Barcola. The 23-year-old Paris Saint-Germain winger, who scored in the World Cup third-place match for France against England and has been one of the most electric wide players in European football for the past two years, has agreed personal terms with Liverpool and made Anfield his priority destination this summer. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the personal agreement. Fox Sports confirmed it. L’Equipe confirmed it. Ben Jacobs of talkSPORT confirmed it. And Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that Liverpool have now prepared an opening offer and are ready to begin formal negotiations with PSG.

The complication is the fee. PSG value Barcola at €170 million, approximately £145 million. Liverpool want to pay considerably less and those close to the player believe a deal can be done below PSG’s asking price. The two clubs are described by multiple sources as “far apart” on the valuation, which in transfer window language means they are probably €20 to 30 million apart and both sides think time will bring the other closer to their number. Barcola’s contract at PSG runs until 2028, which means PSG have no immediate pressure to sell, but the player himself has informed them he will not be signing a new deal, which is a leverage point Liverpool will use throughout these negotiations. Barcola became frustrated at PSG after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s January 2025 arrival from Napoli established him as the undisputed first choice on the left, leaving Barcola as an impact substitute in the biggest games rather than the starting winger he wants to be.

It is worth noting that Liverpool signed Mohamed Salah’s replacement Alexander Isak from Newcastle for £125 million last season, and the Barcola fee at €170 million would eclipse that. This is a market where Morgan Rogers just went for £117 million. The fee is large but it is not unprecedented in the current landscape, and Barcola’s profile as a 23-year-old France international with back-to-back Champions League winner’s medals makes the valuation defensible. I think this deal gets done before the window closes. It may take a few more weeks of negotiation but the player’s desire to join is the deciding factor.

Newcastle United. This Is a Club in Serious Trouble.

I want to spend time on Newcastle because what is happening there right now is genuinely alarming and I do not think it is getting the attention it deserves. In the past twelve months, Alexander Isak left for Liverpool for £125 million. Anthony Gordon left for Barcelona for £69 million plus add-ons. Sandro Tonali left for Tottenham for £100 million. Three of their five best players. Combined fees approaching £300 million. And then this week, on top of the Guimaraes situation above, Eddie Howe resigned as manager, ending his time at St James’ Park after an extraordinary run that had taken Newcastle from relegation candidates to Champions League regulars. The loss of Howe, whom I consider one of the best managers in English football, is arguably the most significant blow of all.

The question everyone is asking is what Newcastle have done with all the money from those sales. The honest answer is: not enough. Sources suggest they missed out on their main transfer targets after the Isak sale and did not adequately reinvest the Tonali and Gordon fees in this window. Finishing twelfth in the Premier League last season, without European football, having sold your best players and lost your manager. This is not where Newcastle’s owners expected to be when they took over this project. The next appointment is critical and the club are searching urgently for a new manager. If they lose Guimaraes on top of everything else, the rebuild becomes even more significant.

Real Madrid. Julian Alvarez. The Public Humiliation.

Real Madrid made a €150 million bid for Julian Alvarez. Atletico Madrid’s official response, posted on their social media accounts, was: “You make us laugh even more than Barcelona do.” They pointed to Alvarez’s €500 million release clause and confirmed they would not consider any offer for the player, who is contracted until 2030. Atletico president Enrique Cerezo subsequently confirmed in public that Alvarez is not for sale at any realistic price. Real Madrid have confirmed, per MARCA, that they will not enter a bidding war and have withdrawn from the pursuit. Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG have all been linked with their own interest in Alvarez, but Atletico’s resolve appears completely firm. His 49 goals in 106 appearances since joining from Manchester City in August 2024 for €75 million explain precisely why Atletico would rather keep him than take any offer short of his release clause.

On Vinicius Junior, as mentioned above, Real Madrid are confident he will sign a new contract. His current deal runs until the summer of 2027. Mourinho rates him extremely highly and has made clear he is a key part of his plans. Real Madrid’s position is that his market value of around £137 million makes it unthinkable to allow him to run into the final year of his deal, and conversations with his representatives are ongoing. For now, he stays.

Barcelona. Still No Lewandowski Replacement. This Is Becoming Urgent.

Barcelona’s summer has been strong in some areas and significantly weak in one critical one. Anthony Gordon arrived from Newcastle for £69 million and has already presented himself in Spanish at his unveiling. Joao Cancelo returned from Al-Hilal for just €10 million. But Robert Lewandowski’s departure after four seasons and 120 goals from 193 appearances has left a gap in attack that the club have not yet publicly addressed. Julian Alvarez remains their top target but Atletico are simply not selling. ESPN confirms Barcelona have also sounded out Eli Junior Kroupi of Bournemouth as a possible alternative. The longer this drags into August without a solution, the more the title defence is put at risk before it has even begun.

The Rest. Gossip, Rumours and Things Worth Watching.

Napoli have confirmed Massimiliano Allegri as their new manager on a contract until June 2029. He takes over a club that signed Kevin De Bruyne this summer and has genuine ambitions to challenge for a second Serie A title. The combination of Allegri’s pragmatic tactical approach and De Bruyne’s creative intelligence is one of the more intriguing management-player pairings in European football heading into the new season.

Juventus are interested in Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United. ESPN confirms Juve want the Dutch forward, United are open to offers, and all options including a season-long loan with an obligation or a permanent transfer are being explored. Zirkzee has struggled for consistency at Old Trafford since his £36.5 million arrival from Bologna and a fresh start in Serie A could benefit all parties.

John Stones is in talks with Inter Milan over a move to Serie A after leaving Manchester City as a free agent at the end of last season. The 32-year-old has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs including Chelsea, but ESPN reports that Inter are leading the race for his signature. A player of his experience and defensive intelligence would be a very useful addition for Simone Inzaghi’s side.

And Aurelien Tchouameni looks set to stay at Real Madrid, with his new improved deal expected to sit just below €10 million annually per BeSoccer. The France international was linked with several clubs after his excellent World Cup but Mourinho values him as a key midfield option and the new terms reflect that.

The Final Word. What This Window Tells Us.

Transfer windows are always chaotic in the weeks after a World Cup, but this one feels different in a specific way. The Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson deals have reset the British transfer record twice in the same fortnight, establishing a new baseline for what elite Premier League clubs are prepared to spend on players who are good but have not yet won anything at the very highest level. If those fees are possible for 23 and 22 year olds, what does that mean for the valuation of someone like Bradley Barcola, who is 23 and has two Champions League winner’s medals? PSG’s €170 million asking price no longer looks as outrageous as it did before Rogers went for £117 million. The market has moved. Fast.

The stories to watch most closely between now and September 1: Barcola to Liverpool, which I believe will happen. Guimaraes to Arsenal, which is closer than it has ever been. Barcelona’s centre-forward search, which is becoming genuinely urgent. And whatever Newcastle do next, because a club that has just lost Isak, Gordon, Tonali, Howe and potentially Guimaraes in the space of twelve months is either in the middle of a managed rebuild that nobody has properly explained to the public, or is in the early stages of something more concerning. I am watching that one very closely indeed.
