12 Games to Watch This Weekend: Can Anyone Stop Barcelona?

By Matchday Pundit | Friday 16 October 2026.

Barcelona have scored 34 La Liga goals this season and have won all eight league games. They visit third-placed Betis on Saturday, and the Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Serie A all deliver big games too. Here’s your guide to the weekend, with kickoff times in WAT.

Premier League

Game 1: Leeds vs Man United (Premier League)

When: Sun 18 Oct, 2:00 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Leeds sit 7th on 9 points and United sit 13th on 6. For the first time in Premier League history, the bookmakers make Leeds favourites against United. Both teams have drawn three of their six games, and Leeds have not won in 20 Premier League games that kicked off before 3 PM.

Key player: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored three goals and should lead Leeds’ attack. Leeds miss Mateo Joseph and Joe Rodon, and Dan James is a doubt.

My prediction:1-1.

Game 2: Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal (Premier League)

When: Sun 18 Oct, 4:30 PM WAT

Why it matters: Arsenal sit 2nd on 15 points and Forest sit 15th with 5. Forest lost 3-1 at Crystal Palace last weekend, while Arsenal beat Leeds 2-1. Arsenal then travel to Bayern in the Champions League on 21 October.

Key players: Morgan Gibbs-White has created a team-high 17 chances for Forest this season.

My prediction: Forest 1-2 Arsenal.

Game 3: Everton vs Chelsea (Premier League)

When: Sat 17 Oct, 12:30 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Both teams have 10 points, and Everton stay unbeaten and rank ahead on goal difference. Chelsea thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 last time out. They have scored 15 goals this season but also conceded 13, a joint-league high.

Key player: João Pedro scored twice in that win over Bournemouth. Cole Palmer will also hunt his first away goal at Everton.

My prediction: 2-2.

La Liga

Game 4: Espanyol vs Atlético Madrid (La Liga)

When: Sat 17 Oct, 1:00 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Atlético sit 2nd on 19 points and Espanyol sit 12th on 8. Atlético lost their opening game but have won four straight since.

Key player: Bryan Zaragoza scored in Espanyol’s last league game and gives the home side their best route to goal.

My prediction: Espanyol 1-2 Atlético.

Game 5: Real Betis vs Barcelona (La Liga)

When: Sat 17 Oct, 5:30 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Barcelona lead the table on 24 points and Betis sit 3rd on 19. Betis have lost only once in eight league games, but Barcelona have conceded just seven goals in eight.

Key player: Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong both return from injury, and Barcelona need them back.

My prediction: Betis 1-3 Barcelona.

Game 6: Real Madrid vs Sevilla (La Liga)

When: Sun 18 Oct, 8:00 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Madrid sit 4th on 18 points, six behind Barcelona. Vinícius Júnior serves the first game of a four-match ban for his red card against Villarreal, and the ban also rules him out of the 25 October Clásico.

Key watch: How José Mourinho’s side attacks without Vinícius.

My prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Sevilla.

Ligue 1

Game 7: Strasbourg vs PSG (Ligue 1)

When: Sat 17 Oct, 4:15 PM WAT.

Why it matters: PSG sit 6th on 11 points and Strasbourg sit 11th on 7. PSG have not lost away in Ligue 1 this season, and they face Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Key player: Ferran Torres has scored four league goals in four appearances.

My prediction: Strasbourg 1-2 PSG.

Game 8: Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) vs Nice (Ligue 1)

When: Sun 18 Oct, 7:45 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Lyon sit 4th on 11 points and Nice sit 9th on 8. Lyon suffered their first league defeat of the season last Friday, a 2-1 loss at Lens.

Key absence: Loïs Openda has a hairline fracture in his right fibula and will miss Lyon’s next seven games, including this one.

My prediction: Lyon 2-1 Nice.

Bundesliga

Game 9: Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig (Bundesliga)

When: Sat 17 Oct, 5:30 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Bayern sit 3rd on 11 points, two behind joint leaders Freiburg and Dortmund. They remain unbeaten but have drawn their last two games, 2-2 at Augsburg and 3-3 against Viking in the Champions League. Leipzig sit 5th on 9 points, and these two teams have scored more goals than anyone else in the league. Leipzig have lost all three of their away league games this season.

Key player: Christopher Nkunku leads Leipzig’s league scoring with four goals. Jamal Musiala misses out for Bayern and Manuel Neuer is a doubt.

My prediction: Bayern 3-2 Leipzig.

Game 10: Bayer Leverkusen vs Freiburg (Bundesliga)

When: Sun 18 Oct, 2:30 PM WAT

Why it matters: Freiburg share the lead with Dortmund on 13 points and have not lost yet. They travel to 4th-placed Leverkusen, who have 10 points.

Key player: Patrik Schick leads Leverkusen’s attack, so check his fitness before kickoff.

My prediction: Leverkusen 2-1 Freiburg.

Serie A

Game 11: Venezia vs Napoli (Serie A)

When: Sat 17 Oct, 2:00 PM WAT.

Why it matters: Venezia sit bottom with zero points after six straight defeats and 16 goals conceded. The club sacked coach Giovanni Stroppa on Tuesday. Napoli sit 8th.

Key player: Kevin De Bruyne scored twice in Napoli’s last league outing.

My prediction: Venezia 0-2 Napoli.

Game 12: AC Milan vs Atalanta (Serie A)

When: Sun 18 Oct, 5:00 PM WAT

Why it matters: Milan sit 5th on 12 points and remain unbeaten. Atalanta sit 10th on 9 after beating Venezia 3-1.

Key player: Nikola Krstovic scored twice and set up a third goal against Venezia.

My prediction: Milan 2-1 Atalanta.

Team News

  1. Arsenal: William Saliba is out.
  2. Chelsea: Jamie Gittens is out. Reece James is a doubt
  3. Real Madrid: Vinícius Júnior is suspended
  4. Bayern: Musiala is out and Neuer is a doubt.
  5. Lyon: Openda is out.
  6. PSG: Senny Mayulu is out.

My bold take

I expect Arsenal and Barcelona to win without keeping clean sheets. Barcelona visit PSG on Tuesday and Arsenal visit Bayern on Wednesday, so I’m watching that storyline closely.
