Weekend Football Preview: Chelsea v Man United, Der Klassiker, the Milan Derby, Juventus v Napoli and Liverpool v Arsenal

1. Opening: My verdict

Five matches this weekend, and one theme runs through all of them: pressure. Carrick and Alonso both need a result at Stamford Bridge. Spalletti’s Juventus face a Napoli side in form. Bayern host Dortmund without their head coach on the touchline, but with a new Ballon d’Or winner leading the attack. Inter visit Milan without Lautaro Martínez. Arsenal go to Anfield days after the Fleetwood exit.

My verdict is that Liverpool v Arsenal matters most for the title race, Der Klassiker matters most for a league lead, and Chelsea v United could decide a manager’s future. Here is the evidence for each, then my own read.

2. The evidence

Saturday: Chelsea v Manchester United (1:30pm)

Chelsea vs Man united.

Chelsea and United meet at Stamford Bridge at 12:30 UK time. Alonso and Carrick both risk three straight defeats in all competitions. Chelsea arrive after a 2-0 home loss to Tottenham and a League Cup exit on penalties at Anfield. Only Crystal Palace and Ipswich have conceded more Premier League goals than Chelsea’s 15.

For United, Carrick survived the 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. His side are winless in eight straight games. Bruno Fernandes is set to start after clear-the-air talks with Carrick, and Kobbie Mainoo is back in training and in contention. United are still looking for their first away league win this season. Chelsea are six points and 11 places ahead in the table. The last two meetings at Stamford Bridge both finished 1-0, with United winning last season.

Saturday: Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund (6:30pm)

Bayern vs Dortmund.

It is the first Klassiker of the Bundesliga season, with both teams level on points at the top and separated only by goal difference. Vincent Kompany collapsed at the training ground and was taken to hospital, so co-coach Aaron Danks is in charge. Danks guided Bayern to a 3-1 win at Freiburg. Kompany will not be on the sideline.

The Kane angle. His Ballon d’Or was the first by a Bayern player since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981, and the first by any Bundesliga player since Matthias Sammer in 1996. Kane has averaged a goal every 80 minutes against Dortmund in the Bundesliga. As we reported, he scored 36 Bundesliga goals last season. This is his first league game since winning the award, and he is expected to lead the line.

Dortmund bring a solid defence. Their four goals conceded are the fewest of any team in Europe’s top five leagues. They are unbeaten in the league, with five wins and two draws. Bayern have scored 25 Bundesliga goals, including a record 18 at home at this stage. Kovac has never beaten Kompany, with one draw and three defeats. Bayern also won the August Supercup 2-1 at Dortmund.

Saturday: AC Milan v Inter (8:45pm)

AC Milan vs Inter Milan.

Inter lead Serie A and are unbeaten, with eight wins and a draw from nine games. Milan are fifth on 18 points, seven behind their neighbours. Milan come in after a 4-2 home defeat to Bologna.

Inter’s captain, Lautaro Martínez, is out with an injury. John Stones, Curtis Jones, Benjamin Pavard and Luis Henrique are also missing. Milan are without Matteo Gabbia, Alexis Saelemaekers and Samuel Chukwueze, all out long term. Milan won both league derbies 1-0 last season, so Chivu is looking for his first derby win after losing both. Opta’s model gives Inter a 46.9% chance of winning, Milan 28.2% and a draw 24.9%. It is Ruben Amorim’s first Milan derby as Milan’s manager.

Sunday: Liverpool v Arsenal (5:30pm)

Arsenal vs Liverpool.

Arsenal are second on 21 points, level with leaders Manchester City and behind only on goal difference. Liverpool are fourth on 15. Arsenal’s winning run is the longest active one in the Premier League. It is the champions’ first game since the Fleetwood defeat. If Liverpool win, they will be classed as title contenders, and a defeat would leave them nine points behind Arsenal.

Saka is out injured. Havertz struggled at Fleetwood and Gyökeres could lead the line. For Liverpool, Wirtz’s ankle is the main fitness question. Isak has scored six league goals this season. Iraola’s side beat Brighton 2-0 last Sunday.

Sunday: Juventus v Napoli (8:45pm)

Juventus vs Napoli

Napoli arrive after a 4-1 win at Monza, while Juventus are reeling from a 2-0 defeat at Genoa. After nine rounds, Napoli were seventh and Juventus eighth, both on 14 points. Napoli’s head coach is serving a suspension, so assistant Marco Landucci takes charge from the bench.

Juventus put the squad in an early training retreat from Friday, after a meeting between the chief executive and the players. The club’s management is backing Spalletti and has no plans to sack him for now. Juventus won the last meeting at the Allianz Stadium 3-0 in January.

3. My analysis

Here is the weekend in one table. The “pressure” and “my lean” columns are my own judgements, and the rest comes from the sources above.

MatchKick-off (WAT)Who is under most pressureBiggest absenceMy lean
Chelsea v Man UnitedSat 1:30pmCarrick, winless in eightChelsea’s leaky defence is the storyChelsea edge, low confidence
Bayern v DortmundSat 6:30pmDortmund’s unbeaten runKompany on the touchlineBayern
AC Milan v InterSat 8:45pmMilan, seven points backLautaro Martínez (Inter)Inter or a draw
Liverpool v ArsenalSun 5:30pmArsenal, after FleetwoodSaka (Arsenal)Draw
Juventus v NapoliSun 8:45pmSpallettiNapoli’s head coach, suspendedToo close to call

Three things stand out.

Defence decides two of these. Dortmund’s defence and Bayern’s attack set up a clean contest in Munich. The other side is Chelsea, who have conceded 15 league goals and face a United side that has been leaking goals too.

Missing players shape the derbies. Inter without Lautaro lose their main man in a derby, but they also have the stronger recent form and the better Opta numbers. That is why I lean Inter, though a derby is a poor place to rely on a model.

Arsenal’s test is a different kind of test. The Fleetwood loss was about squad depth. At Anfield they are expected to field a stronger side, which tells us nothing about depth, only about whether the first team can win under pressure.

4. The counterpoint

Previews are guesses. Several of these matches have shaky foundations. Team news can change, such as who is available for Bayern, and the Napoli bench situation is unusual. Dortmund have drawn twice this month, so their unbeaten run could just as easily show a team that struggles to win as one that doesn’t lose. Chelsea and United are both out of form, and a team that is poor in form can still win a one-off derby. I may well be wrong on every lean in the table.

5. Verdict and what to watch

My view: this weekend sorts the title picture in England, the leader in Germany, and perhaps the future of two managers. Watch these:

  • Kane at Bayern. Can the new Ballon d’Or winner add to his Klassiker goals?
  • Arsenal’s first team at Anfield. The response to Fleetwood matters more than the result.
  • Carrick and Spalletti. Both will face questions after their matches whatever happens.
