1. Opening: My verdict
Saturday gives us three games where the pressure is obvious before a ball is kicked. At Stamford Bridge, two managers need a result. In Munich, Bayern host Dortmund with the top of the Bundesliga at stake, and Harry Kane could play his first league game at the Allianz Arena as Ballon d’Or winner. In Milan, a side chasing the leaders meets the unbeaten league leaders in the derby. My verdict is that Der Klassiker is the biggest game of the day because it decides who leads the Bundesliga, while Chelsea v United carries the most personal stakes for the managers. Yesterday I covered all five weekend games in my weekend preview. Today I am going deeper on Saturday’s three games, with the latest team news.
2. The evidence
Chelsea v Manchester United (1:30pm WAT)

Both managers arrive under pressure. Chelsea lost at home to Tottenham last weekend, and went out of the League Cup on penalties at Liverpool on Wednesday even though Xabi Alonso picked a very strong team. We covered the Tottenham game in our football roundup.
The injury list is the bigger problem for Alonso. Reece James, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato and Maxence Lacroix are all out, which leaves him with a problem at centre-back. Moisés Caicedo is available.
For United, the picture is just as hard. They have won only two of their last 12 games in all competitions, including heavy defeats at Como and against Bournemouth. Many expected Michael Carrick to be sacked this week, but he is still in charge, and captain Bruno Fernandes is available after being an unused substitute against Bournemouth. Striker Benjamin Šeško is still out with a shin injury, but Kobbie Mainoo is back in contention.

Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund (6:30pm WAT)

Bayern and Dortmund are the only two teams yet to lose in the Bundesliga this season. Dortmund come to Munich in second place, behind Bayern only on goal difference.
Kane’s first game as the new winner. Harry Kane could make his first appearance at the Allianz Arena as a Ballon d’Or winner. I covered the award in our Kane Ballon d’Or post.
Bayern’s team news. Assistant coach Aaron Danks continues to cover for Vincent Kompany. Manuel Neuer is out with foot pain, and Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz are also out injured. Michael Olise has six goals and three assists in the Bundesliga, the most goal contributions in the division and one more than Kane. Danks said Dortmund also have good attackers, and he knows some of them from his time in England.
Dortmund’s strength. They have the best defensive record in Europe’s top five leagues, with only four goals conceded in the Bundesliga. Their coach, Niko Kovač, called Bayern the best team in Germany and in Europe. In our roundup, we reported that Dortmund last won in the league against Frankfurt, through a late goal from Maximilian Beier.

AC Milan v Inter (8:45pm WAT)

Inter lead Serie A and are unbeaten, with eight wins and a draw from nine games. They have scored 25 goals and conceded 10. Milan are fifth on 18 points, seven behind their neighbours.
Both sides have injury problems. Inter captain Lautaro Martínez will miss the derby with a thigh muscle injury. Milan are without Matteo Gabbia, Alexis Saelemaekers and Samuel Chukwueze, all out long term.

3. My analysis
Here are the three games side by side. The last column is my own view of what matters, not a prediction.
| Match | Kick-off (WAT) | Under pressure | Biggest absences | What I’ll watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chelsea v Man United | 1:30pm | Alonso and Carrick | Chelsea’s centre-backs; Šeško (United) | Whether Chelsea’s defence holds with four players out |
| Bayern v Dortmund | 6:30pm | Both, with the lead at stake | Neuer and Musiala (Bayern) | Kane’s first league game as Ballon d’Or winner |
| AC Milan v Inter | 8:45pm | Milan, seven points back | Lautaro Martínez (Inter) | How Milan close the gap on the leaders |
Absences and standings come from the three sources above. The last column is my opinion.
Three thoughts stand out to me.
Defence is the story in two of the three. Chelsea are short of defenders and need a response after two defeats this week. Dortmund have conceded only four goals this season, the best record in Europe’s top five leagues. Those are very different situations, and each will shape how I expect the matches to go.
Missing players change who carries the load. At Bayern, Neuer, Musiala and Díaz are out, so more responsibility falls on the attack, where Olise and Kane have been productive. At Inter, losing Lautaro removes their captain from the front line. In both cases I will be watching who steps up.
Managers are the common thread. Alonso and Carrick are at Stamford Bridge, Danks is leading Bayern in Kompany’s absence, and Milan are trying to close a seven-point gap. Several of these managers are in unusual situations, and that makes the day more interesting than a normal Saturday.
4. The counterpoint
I could be reading too much into the pressure on these managers. Form can disappear in a single game, and bad runs often end in derbies. United’s poor record this season does not stop them from winning at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea’s injuries might matter less than I think. Dortmund’s strong defence could be broken, and Bayern could cope with their absences. In Milan, Inter’s unbeaten record gives them an advantage on paper, but derbies often ignore the table. Everything above is an opinion about what to watch, and none of it is a prediction.
5. Verdict and what to watch
My view: Saturday is about squads dealing with absences, and about managers under pressure. Chelsea v United will show whether either manager can steady a difficult run. Der Klassiker will show if Dortmund’s defence can handle the Ballon d’Or winner in Munich. The Milan derby will show whether Milan can start closing the gap.
Now it’s your turn. Which of these three games are you most excited about? Drop your score predictions in the comments, and I’ll look back at them in my follow-up post. And who do you think wins Der Klassiker?
